Tom Chambers loved visiting the island of Spinalonga last year
WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE HOLIDAY?
I had a real moment when I went to Crete last year and visited the former leper colony Spinalonga.
We visited the island by boat and it was like walking on to a Harry Potter film set, with all caves and buildings built into the rocks.
Our guide had fascinating stories about lepers who went to hide there and those tales have stayed with me; it’s humbling to think how lucky we are to be able bodied.
The rest of the holiday was pretty memorable too – you can’t beat a bit of Greek plate smashing.
AND YOUR WORST?
In 2000 I took a flight to Kenya to visit my sister who lived there, and a madman stormed the cockpit, intending to crash the plane.
He took over the controls and for two-and-a-half minutes the plane was nose-diving, literally falling out the sky.
Apparently we were four seconds away from crashing, before the crew regained control.
Tom and his sister almost died on a flight to Kenya
What I remember most is everyone praying aloud in different languages.
I joined in, as it seemed the right thing to do.
I was straight on a connecting flight afterwards so I had no time to develop a fear of flying.
My sister told me off for being late!
Tom met his first crush in Aigua Blava, in 1987
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SOUVENIR?
An old Spanish ashtray – you know the sort, bright yellow with painted flowers.
It reminds me of family holidays in Aigua Blava, a gem of a place in northeastern Spain which I still visit.
My family started going there in 1987 and I had my first crush on a girl called Lucy from Liverpool.
I saw her every year and from the age of 15 to 19 we’d get the ashtray and have a cheeky fag and snog.
Fond memories indeed.
Tom’s favourite holiday read is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
BEST HOLIDAY READ?
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
It’s a truly wonderful book about trusting your instincts and finding your destiny.
I read it on holiday in Aigua Blava in 2003, after five years unemployed trying to become an actor.
I was about to quit until I read this, sat on a balcony, overlooking the sea.
It inspired me to not give up.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ON HOLIDAY?
If it’s just Claire and me we love to sit and chat by the sea or pool – no books, no phones.
If we’re with the children we like simple pleasures such as roasting marshmallows whilst camping, or crabbing at Salcombe in Devon.
Tom loves the laid-back atmosphere of Santa Monica
WHERE WOULD YOU REVISIT?
Los Angeles, which is strange because I have a love-hate relationship with it.
I went a few times during pilot season, trying to get acting work and found it artificial, but I’ve been back with my family and now think it’s charming.
I love the laid-back atmosphere of Santa Monica and the Farmers Market on the corner of 3rd Street at Fairfax Avenue.
There’s so much to see and with Frank Sinatra music playing in the streets I’m a happy man.
A sand beach near Muscat, in Oman
Oman – Dubai is too expensive.
I’m taking the family for New Year and plan to rest my legs and make sandcastles on the beach with the kids.
