Claire runs us through her best and worst holidays
She’s currently touring the UK. Claire lives in London with three-year-old son Jaxon.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE HOLIDAY?
I travelled around the world several times as a cruise ship singer and my favourite port was always Palma de Mallorca.
I remember coming into dock aged 19 and walking along the Paseo Maritimo esplanade.
Palma’s stunning Gothic cathedral La Seu was on my left, super-yachts bobbing on the sea to my right and I thought, “One day I’ll buy a place here. That’s the dream.”
And I did. I bought a house just outside Palma 12 years ago and love driving up into the mountains or chugging through orange and almond orchards on a train to Sóller.
I like hanging out and nibbling pa amb oli (Majorcan bread rubbed with garlic, tomato and olive oil) at the Placa Major, one of the old town squares which is packed with musicians and mime artists.
AND YOUR WORST?
I was 18 and booked to sing at the Miss Portugal beauty contest in Vilamoura.
I caught chicken pox and had to sing with a face full of blisters, while all these beauty queens paraded around me.
WHICH SOUVENIR DO YOU CHERISH MOST?
A gold and orange sari from India. The cruise ships stopped in Goa in the early ’90s and a friend took me to his rural family home.
The women undressed me, covered me in talc and slipped a beautiful, embroidered sari over my head.
They took me to meet the rest of the village and I felt like royalty.
Barbados is perfect for relaxing says Claire
BEST HOLIDAY READ?
I remember reading my mum’s Jackie Collins novel, Hollywood Wives, on holiday in Tenerife when I was 11 – talk about leaving a lasting impression!
I’d sneakily read it whenever Mum took a nap on the sun lounger and couldn’t believe how rude it was. It was my introduction to sex education.
HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ON HOLIDAY?
I’m touring so much that I just like chilling on a beach.
Barbados is great for relaxing – I always head to Surfside beach bar in Holetown.
It’s a wooden shack on the beach – no shoes, quite rough and ready. But they do knockout rum punches and it’s always lively.
WHERE WOULD YOU REVISIT?
Benidorm. I fell in love with it during filming the TV show named after it. Tony Maudsley, who plays hairdresser Kenneth, took me to a little Spanish village called Altea.
We walked up narrow, cobbled lanes and sat in a beautiful square next to a blue-and-white tiled church dome, feasting on Manchego cheese, juicy prawns and meatball tapas.
I’m on a Mediterranean cruise right now on my week off. We’ve visited Valencia, Barcelona and Cartagena – you can’t beat waking up in a beautiful new city.
When the tour’s finished in June, I’ll go to my house in Mallorca.
