Bed bugs: How to check your hotel for signs of bedbugs

Bed bugs are one of the worst things to come across when on holiday.

The creatures can hide in fabric and materials without being spotted, meaning they are easily transported around.

With a high volume of people staying in the same room, they often thrive in hotels.

Holidaymakers can perform a number of checks to ensure they aren’t staying in a place full of the critters.

The first place to check is the mattress.

Called the S.L.E.E.P method, it explains how to thoroughly check the room for the bugs

Arrow Environmental Services Matthew Miller explained to News Channel 8 how to check the mattress adequately.

“Particularly the cracks and the crevices in the mattresses [should be checked],” he explained.

Worryingly, they can hide extremely deeply in the material.

Miller explained: “I very commonly find them in the labels on the mattress, as well.”

He also gave an acronym on how to check for bed bugs when travelling.

Bed bugs: Hotel mattresses are the worst place for them to hide

SURVEY the room for signs that the bugs are present. This can include red or brown flecks on the sheets and materials that have been left behind from the blood.

LIFT and look under furniture. Chairs, mattresses, and even decorations such as skirting boards and pictures can hide bed bugs.

ELEVATE luggage and put it onto something that is not material – avoid the carpet and material luggage holders and instead put it on a hard counter or table.

EXAMINE luggage before taking it home to avoid carrying bed bugs back.

PLACE all clothes and fabrics in a machine on a hot wash for at least 15 minutes to kill anything left behind, or use a strong hairdryer on the hot setting.
