Cheap flights can be a digital minefield, as airlines are constantly adjusting their fares.

No one wants to pay through the nose to find that later on the same ticket is available for a much cheaper price.

However, there is one little-known expert trick to help travellers pay the least expensive fare possible.

Being savvy when it comes to your rights could leave you with hundreds of extra pounds in your pocket, so don’t miss out.

According to savings experts you are due a refund from airlines if tickets go on sale after you have bought them for a higher price.

There is even a website that offers to look for these lower prices for you and help you get your money back.

They told Business Insider UK: “If you buy a flight and it goes on sale, airlines can refund you.

“Yapta lets you input your flight details to be alerted when you’re eligible for a refund.”

This trick works for Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue, United, US Airways and Virgin America airlines.

However, there is a trick that works with most airlines within a 24-hour window.

Jeanette Pavini, a savings expert at Coupons.com, told Business Insider UK: “Most airlines allow you to cancel your flight within a 24-hour period without a penalty, so if you spot a great deal, you can book it and check the price again in the morning. If the price fell, you can call and cancel the booking.”

Always make sure you check the terms of your booking when you book and when you try to claim.

Another trick to make sure you don’t miss cheap flights is to check at a certain time.

There is one specific time of the week that is best to find cheap flights in the sales, according to one expert.

Express.co.uk recently revealed that the cost of a plane seat could be more than the actual flight.

Research by travel search engine Kayak.co.uk found that the seat sometimes costs up to 100 per cent more to reserve a plane seat.
